Mother’s Day 2023 Flowers:

One of the most traditional Mother’s Day gifts in the UK is flowers. This is because flowers of various types have been used to symbolise motherhood for hundreds of years, due to their association with life and purity.  Here at Twinkl we’ve teamed up with one of the UK’s best-loved online flower delivery services, Wild & Bloom, to bring you a fantastic collection of floral themed Mother’s Day craft activities.

Inspired by Wild & Bloom’s philosophy of “it’s the care that counts”, these activities have been designed to make sure that all children can have the opportunity to gift their mother figure something floral and beautiful.

How did Mother’s Day begin?

On this day during the 16th century, Christians would visit their nearest big church called the Mother Church during Lent.

At that time, it was common for children to leave home and get a job with the domestic service. This would mean that they lived at the place they worked and were not allowed home very often.

Mothering Sunday was a rare day off when all children were allowed to go home and visit their mothers. As they walked home, they would pick wildflowers along the paths and give them to their mothers. This led to the tradition of giving mothers flowers on Mother’s Day.

Originally in the UK, Mothering Sunday and the more widely celebrated International Mother’s Day were not the same; it happened over time that the two merged together. However, the dates the day is celebrated still vary from country to country.
